Installing Fiberglass ShinglesIf you are in need of a new roof, you will want to install or have installed fiberglass shingles. In most areas of the country there is a limit of how many layers of shingles that you are allowed to have on your roof, that number is three, so you will want to inspect your roof before you make any plans of replacing shingles or your roof. Fiberglass shingles are easy to install yourself if you are a handyman by trade or enjoy doing work on your own home. It has been found that having a ridge vent will help with the life of your home and shingles as well, so if there is one make certain you work on it also or if you do not have one now would be the time to install it. Tar paper needs to be laid down before starting the shingles to ensure a smooth surface as well as creating a good weather barrier for your new roof. When installing your first row of shingles you will want to lay them upside down, about one inch over the edge of your roof, this is the started strip. Next you will need to snap chalk lines across the roof to ensure you will have a straight line to follow as a guide. The chalk line will ensure that you have a straight line of shingles and don't end up with shingles going up or down hill. |
